Are there any eastern monestaries that still maintain their ancient practices of spirituality?

I wish to back pack through europe but I want to end up in mountanous asia, like Tibet, to stay with monks and figure out who I am while getting there. Basically a pilgramage. Where could I find such a place, that would remain personal and sacred? Where a master could take me in as his student and show me ways? Untainted by technology or 'modern-philosophy'? It feels like humanity and western culture has spoiled all of the ancient temples and residents, and as a Canadian it makes me sad.
