I want to begin building furniture. What are good woods and can you get these at Home Depot / Lowes?

I'm learning how to make furniture (first project is a coffee table.) What are some good woods to use for furniture making? And can you get these woods at Home Depot or Lowes or would I need to go to a lumber yard?
