Do water tests expire?

I am sure test kits can lose their effectiveness over time. It seems odd for it to happen so quickly. Maybe see what the LFS finds then double check your procedures. You may have made a misstep somewhere that brought about the 0 on the nitrates. Maybe check and see if the fungus medicine reacts with the chemicals in your test kit.
